It is difficult to live in your parents’ shadow, let alone share the exact same name. In modern day New York, Gloria (25) who was named after her mother (nothing unusual there – men have been doing it for centuries), dreams of being a theatre actress. In order to distinguish herself from her mother, she goes by the name Emma. In her youth, Gloria Sr. (55) was herself a successful film star. At one point in time, she really had it all: fame and fortune, the adoration of fans across the globe and a handsome husband. But over the years, she lost her career, along with her fame, husband and most of the fans. Unfortunately for Emma, who still lives with her, she has become her mother's sole focus, and she is often subject to her moods. Gloria has become controlling, manipulating and at times cruel, trying to get Emma to live life the way she does: through Art. Determined not to be a vessel by which her mother can live vicariously, Emma decides to move out and pursue her acting career alone. This of course leaves Gloria absolutely devastated at first. However, after realizing that none of her old tricks can get her daughter back, she decides to relaunch her old career through a publicity stunt…

While Emma, living with her long-time friend Johnny, finds a job as an actress with the help of her uncle Matt. Matt is the brother of Gloria, has little time for his own life and is a buffer between his sister and niece. The two women are determined to show that they can live without each other. However, a series of unfortunate events throw a spanner in the works and ensures that the paths of mother and daughter cross again.
